On April 14, 1988, The Wall Street Journal published a story about a decade of defects in some Ford vehicles. Nearly 23 million people were notified in 1980 that their 1970-79 vehicles had defects that allowed them to go in reverse while the transmission was set in park. One woman in the story stepped out of her 1979 Lincoln and then watched it circle backward until a tow-truck finally corralled it.
